John Winters – Principal

John Winters has been teaching Maths, Physics and Applied Maths to Leaving Certificate (Higher Level) since 1993 and holds a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. Over the years his students have achieved exceptional grades in the State examinations. His knowledge of the curriculum and the imagination which he puts into his classes has been a source of huge benefit to students embarking on their studies of the Project Maths Course. During his career he has taught more than 250 revision courses in Maths and Physics and is a published author of exam strategy for both subjects in the Leaving Cert Education Supplement, ‘The Leaving Certificate Toolkit’ published by the Sunday Business Post.

Philip has over 20 years’ teaching experience and has worked for 10 years for the State Exams Commission as a Leaving Certificate Examiner. Declan Fitzpatrick BA, H Dip in Ed, Dip in Cate., M.Ed., taught Irish and English to all levels for 35 years in Templeogue College, Dublin. He has been an Assistant Examiner with the Department of Education and Skills at Leaving Certificate Higher Level and has had his revision notes published in both subjects.

Peter Jackson is a vastly experienced teacher of Biology and Chemistry to Leaving Cert Higher level and this year he is adding Agricultural Science to the list of subjects he is teaching at Ashfield College. He has been teaching in St Columbus College, Dublin for many years and has taught a multitude of Revision classes over the last 30 years. Peter is the author of several Leaving Cert text books in both Biology and Chemistry and has extensive experience as an Examiner for the State Exams Commission.
Maitiú Ó Faoláin

With eleven years teaching experience, including being a senior member of the teaching staff in Coláiste Árainn Mhóir Donegal, Maitiú is a dynamic and talented teacher who makes every effort to make Irish accessible for all of his students. Maitiú has vast experience of teaching Leaving Certificate Irish both to 5th and 6th year students, as well as to adults pursuing a career as Primary School Teachers and is able to provide support and cater for students of all ability levels and age groups. His students achieve exceptional results and most develop a ‘grá’ for the language due to his obvious love for the subject.

Jennifer is an exceptionally popular and effective teacher who has taught both Geography and English at Ashfield College for more than five years. She is passionate about her subjects and has a gift for inspiring her students. She recognises the importance of the English language and the skills associated with it, not only as part of the Leaving Certificate syllabus for the subject itself, but across all other subjects also, especially now that such emphasis is placed on literacy in education. Having completed a Master of Arts degree in Geography, she aims to promote the subject among students in order for them to recognise its importance in a world plagued by environmental problems and issues of sustainability.

Nicky is a dynamic and inspirational teacher of modern languages, who graduated with the highest grade ever achieved for the PGCE from the University of Manchester. Nicky has more than 20 years’ experience teaching both French & German to Leaving Cert level, and has worked at Ashfield College since 1997. During her time at Ashfield College she was Director of TEFL, where she was in charge of curriculum and teaching. Nicky is an extremely exam-focused, practical and enthusiastic teacher who inspires her students to achieve their maximum potential in the State Exams.

Kathleen has extensive experience teaching Music at Junior & Leaving Certificate Level, both at Higher & Ordinary Level. She has been preparing and conducting Practical Music exams for the Leaving Cert for 10 years and is experienced in teaching the Music Technology element of the practical exam. Kathleen is an accomplished oboist and has experience in orchestral performance, conducting both orchestras and choirs. She also plays the piano and guitar.

Nigel Macmillan has over 10 years experience teaching Maths, Physics and Applied Maths. He holds a Honours Degree in Engineering and a Masters in teaching and learning. He is passionate about teaching and achieving the best for his students. He has created a course of Physics video lessons covering all aspects of the Leaving Certificate Physics course.

Eoghan Casey is a Barrister-at-Law and also holds a First Class Honours Degree in Mathematical Science and has taught at secondary and university level. He scored the highest mark in the country in Leaving Cert Honours Maths his year. Eoghan worked for over four years in finance where recruitment is heavily reliant on performance in aptitude tests and puzzle-type exams and interviews.

Darran is a secondary school teacher of Irish and Geography for the past 10 years. He has a great passion for his two subjects and spends much of the summer in the Gaeltacht. Darran puts a massive emphasis on the spoken language and firmly believes that this improves all aspects of the language. He has done much work with the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) to encourage the use of technology in language learning. He takes great pride in giving students a ‘grá’ for the language and engaging them. He is very much aware of the challenges students face when learning the language but is confident in his ability to equip students with the tools and confidence they need to excel in the language.

Steve has been teaching for over twenty years and has taught evening and revision courses in Ashfield College for more than five of those and still loves his job! He has held positions as Head of Maths, Head of Physics, IT Coordinator, as well as being an Assistant Principal in Coláiste Eoin. This amount of experience coupled with his enthusiasm for his subjects and for passing it on to students has resulted in high levels of positive feedback from Ashfield students over the years.

Dr. Ali Selim
BA (Hons) Faculty of languages and translation Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt, 1993, MSc Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College,Dublin
Since 1999, Dr Selim has been teaching Arabic to native and non-native speakers and lectures in Arabic studies at Trinity College. Dr Selim also taught the International Arabic Baccalaureate for several years and many his students received student’s award at UCD. He taught Arabic for a number of Irish politicians e.g. John Gormley, Secretary of the Green Party and Irish Diplomats such as Patrick Sammon, First Secretary. Some of his publications have been published by Cambridge Scholar press and currently he is preparing his book “Arabic for Leaving Certificate”.

Providing students with the tools to complete creative endeavours far beyond their Leaving Certificate is an aim of Ashfield College art teacher, Sarah Clarke. She creates a classroom environment which promotes opportunities for creative thinking, innovation, discussion and practical experimentation, while at the same time ensuring that examination material is considered, practiced and at the forefront of the student experience on a daily basis. An experienced teacher, Sarah has provided guidance across a wide range of educational settings in primary, post primary, post Leaving Certificate and third level settings. As well as teaching in Ashfield College, Sarah currently works part time as a teacher/researcher with the Aspergers Syndrome Association of Ireland (ASPIRE) in conjunction with Trinity College, Dublin (TCD). She is also involved in a range of studies conducted by the School of Education in TCD. She has presented her research materials at national and international conferences and has a particular interest in the areas of ‘readiness to learn’; ‘student self-direction skill set development’ and ‘arts education’.
