At Ashfield College, we understand the importance of unlocking every student’s full potential during the Leaving Certificate. That’s why we offer Extra Leaving Cert Subjects—also known as “Out of School Subjects”—designed specifically for students who wish to broaden their subject choices beyond what is available at their own school.
Every year, many students boost their academic performance and improve their chances of achieving their desired results by adding an extra subject to their Leaving Cert timetable with us.
Our Extra Leaving Cert Subjects allow students to explore new academic interests or strengthen their exam points tally by selecting subjects not provided by their school. These classes are expertly structured to meet the needs of Leaving Cert students, ensuring focused preparation and comprehensive support. All classes will begin in early September 2026, giving students the perfect head start in their exam preparation.
Overview
Studying an Extra Subject/ ‘Out of School Subject’ allows students, external to Ashfield College, to reap all the benefits of the Ashfield College’s educational experience in a subject that complements their existing Leaving Certificate studies.
It allows students to maximise their potential CAO points yield at the end of the year. Our Extra Leaving Cert Subjects programmes cover the entire syllabus in just one year and are suitable for both 5th and 6th year students looking to boost their performance in the Leaving Certificate exams. We also assist and support students in relevant project preparation.
Extra subjects are scheduled at times that optimise a balance between classroom time, study time and project work for students.

The entire syllabus is completed in one year. These classes are scheduled after the usual school day, (typically from 5 p.m. onwards), thereby allowing students to join us from their own school. Classes are held two evenings a week
What is the difference between Grinds and Extra Leaving Cert Subjects?
Parents and students should note the essential difference between taking Grinds in Ashfield College versus taking an Extra Leaving Cert Subject in Ashfield College.
Our Grinds programme is designed to complement work already being done by the student’s own teacher in their own school; it presupposes that a student already has a teacher in another school. As such, grinds can be considered as a ‘top up’.
Extra Subject/ ‘Out of School Subjects’ are for students who do not have a teacher teaching them the subject in their own school. As such, our teachers cover the entire syllabus with the student in the one year.
Extra Leaving Cert Subjects 2026-2027
All Extra Subjects/ ‘Out of School’ Subjects classes will commence week beginning 7th September 2026.
- Classical Studies – Times: Two evenings per week for 90 minutes (3 hours per week) over the course of the academic year. Teacher: Pat Fahy
- Business – Times: Two hours a week, one evening a week; Teacher: Philip Curry
- Arabic – Times: Two evenings per week as per timetable; Teacher: Dr. Ali Selim
- Agricultural Science – Times: Two evenings per week as per timetable: Teacher: Niamh Condon

The tuition fee is €1,550.
