* Please note: as our teachers teach the full programme in one year, applications received after the initial course start date in September, and before December 1st, will be reviewed by our teachers. Late applications i.e. applications received after December 1st 2021 will not be accepted.

Our exceptionally popular course – Irish for Entry in to Primary School Teaching is specifically designed to help students gain the Leaving Cert Higher Level Irish requirement needed for admission on to Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Primary Teacher Training programmes in Ireland.

This intensive part-time Irish for Entry in to Primary School Teaching Course is aimed at mature students. You will be part of a small group of students who all have the same goal in mind as you i.e. attaining the required Leaving Cert Higher Level Irish requirement which will allow you to enter a Primary School teacher training programme.

Our superb teachers have been teaching this course for many years. They know exactly what it takes to get you the result that you need. The course covers the prescribed Leaving Certificate Higher Level course, in full, in one academic year*. It is suitable for you even if you took Ordinary Level Irish in a previous Leaving Cert.

We hold our classes in the evenings, thereby allowing you to fit this course in with your own work schedule. Similarly, we teach our classes face to face and also online. Enrolled students benefit from access to all recorded classes to assist with revision throughout the academic year. All students have the opportunity to take a mock Oral Exam in the Spring to complete their preparation before sitting the Leaving Certificate Irish examination.

Leaving Cert Irish Entry Requirements for Initial Teacher Education – Primary Teacher Training Programmes

The Department of Education sets down entry requirements for entry on to all Initial Teacher Education programmes.

Tables 1 and 2 set out the current Minimum Entry Requirements for both the Bachelor of Education and Professional Master of Education.

Leaving Cert English & Maths Entry Requirements for Initial Teacher Education – Primary Teacher Training Programmes

Please note that it is also necessary to have a minimum grade of O4 or H7 in both Leaving Cert English & Mathematics in order to meet the entry requirements for Primary teacher training.  Having provided excellence in education for over 40 years, Ashfield College offers a wide range of grinds and extra tuition in all Leaving Cert subjects.

Students on our Irish For Entry in to Primary School Teaching Course may avail of our special discounted rate. Our Irish For Entry in to Primary School Teaching students can join our Leaving Cert English (Higher level only) and/or Maths (Higher or Ordinary Level) for half price.*

Teachers Maria Wheelan and Darran Breathnach, are committed to the success of those participating in this programme and always go the extra mile to ensure that students have the best chance of reaching their potential.

Maria and Darran are experienced in teaching classes of mature students and all segments of the examination are covered with graded assessments.  All students have the opportunity to take a mock oral exam in the Spring to complete their preparation before sitting the Leaving Certificate Irish examination.

Darran Breathnach
B.A (Honours) NUIM, Ard-dioplóma san oideachas NUIG, PGDEL (Tóraíocht) NUIM.

Darran is a second level teacher of Irish for the past 15 years. He has a great passion for his subject and spends much of the Summer working on Gaeltacht courses. Darran puts a massive emphasis on the spoken language and he firmly believes that this improves all aspects of the language. He has done much work with the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) to encourage the use of technology in language learning. He takes great pride in giving students a ‘grá’ for the language and engaging them with the language in an enjoyable way. He is confident in his ability to equip students with the tools and confidence they need to excel in the language. For many years now, Darran has been helping our Ashfield College students to achieve their goal in Irish.

Maria Whelan
B.A. (Honours) NUIM, M.A. (Honours) NUIM, PGDE (Honours) NUIM, PGDELM (Honours) MU, MAELM (Honour – ongoing) MU.

Maria is a second-level teacher of Irish for the past 13 years. She has a grá for Gaeilge and endeavours to inspire the same in her students.

Maria spends time every summer working in Gaeltacht courses and has also worked as a Leaving Certificate examiner. She uses this experience in her teaching to help students maximise their marks with a focus on the marking schemes and how best to address exam questions.

Maria places a strong emphasis on the Oral Irish component as she believes this helps to improve all areas of competency in the language.

Maria’s lessons incorporate a variety of notes, resources and sample answers to aid students in achieving their full potential in Irish. Every effort is made to make Irish more accessible for all learners in the class.

Maria has been teaching students in Ashfield College for a number of years now.
