Leaving Certificate Chemistry can be studied as a one or two year programme as a full-time day school student.

So, if you enjoyed Junior Cert Science and you have done well in this and Maths you should be a good candidate for Leaving Cert Chemistry. Chemistry is an essential element in the study of careers including: Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Technology.

Sean has a passion for teaching his subjects to the highest standards. He has experience working in the UK and Ireland and has held the positions of Head of Chemistry and Vocational Science Coordinator. Sean has worked as a performance manager, helping the school leadership teams to monitor, observe and train staff.  He has had responsibilities for the administration, development and implementation of effective schemes of work for State Examination bodies.  Sean also works for the State Exam Commission as an Exam co-ordinator.  He has an in-depth knowledge of the exams and marking schemes, having taught students who have achieved 100% (400/400) in the their Leaving Certificate Chemistry exam.  He aims to promote his courses with enthusiasm and relevance, using exam based material to allow for the best possible opportunities.

Subject Content
The course consists of the study of a variety of aspects of Chemistry under the following headings:

  • Atomic Structure
  • Volumetric Analysis
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Water Chemistry
  • Reaction Mechanisms

Exam Structure

The leaving cert exam is three hours in duration. Each candidate must answer at least two questions from Section A (experimental section) and a maximum of six questions from Section B. There are eleven questions in total on the exam paper, each carrying 50 marks.
