Leaving Certificate Design & Communication Graphics  can be studied as a one or two year programme, either as a full-time day school student or as an external student as an extra subject.  


Course commences early September 2020 for the academic year 2020/21.

Two evenings per week for 90 minutes (3 hours per week) over the course of the academic year.  Two evenings per week for fifth years and two evenings per week for sixth years.

Val is an education innovator with a passion for teaching students to create their own solutions.

Val graduated from the Bachelor of Technology (Education) in Materials and Engineering Technology in University of Limerick. He has been teaching DCG for over five years now. Val’s classes are firmly rooted in the DCG syllabus, but also impart fundamental life skills: such as problem solving and how to visualise a technical issue. This prepares students for professional environments through essential IT and CAD industry skills.

Val has contributed to Studyclix in Construction Studies and Examsupport.ie in DCG. He has also taught national prize-winning students in DCG.

Subject Group; Practical

This subject develops the ability to comprehend and problem solving and creative thinking skills are developed through the analysis of two and three-dimensional graphics. Graphics and design are communicated using freehand sketching skills, traditional draughting equipment and CAD. Design and Communication Graphics (DCG) has taken the place of technical drawing for the Leaving Certificate. If you are interested in taking this subject to Leaving Certificate level you will have taken Tech Graphics to Junior Cycleificate level.

Subject Content

The course consists of the study of a variety of aspects of Design & Communication Graphics under the following headings:

  • Dynamic Mechanisms
  • Structural Forms
  • Assemblies
  • Geologic Geometry
  • Surface Geometry
  • Applied Graphics

Exam Structure

One Terminal Exam Paper: 60%
Student Assignment: 40%

The terminal exam is 3 hours in duration.  The student assignment is emphasised on elements of design, communication graphics and use of ICT’s in design.
