Our dedicated team supports students in preparing for the Irish Leaving Certificate examinations, Ireland’s national university entry qualification, recognised by leading universities globally. Established in 1977 the School has near 50 year track record of academic excellence and helping students progress on to their preferred 3rd level course. Our school is warm, friendly, promotes independent but supported learning with a goal of helping each and every student maximise their own potential.
What Is The Irish Leaving Certificate?
Students typically study six to eight subjects over two years (5th and 6th year of secondary school), with a mix of higher (advanced) and ordinary (standard) levels. Assessment is based mainly on written examinations, though some subjects include project work, oral exams, or practical components. The assessment will be based on the subjects you choose and can be discussed at your admissions interview. We provide guidance on which subjects may best suit your goals.
The leaving Certificate is broadly comparable to A Levels, though the Leaving Certificate usually covers a wider range of subjects rather than specialising in just three or four.
It can be seen as roughly equivalent to the High School Diploma combined with Advanced Placement (AP) courses, as it demonstrates both breadth and academic rigor.
Like the IB Diploma, the Leaving Certificate offers university-preparatory study across multiple disciplines, but the IB includes more continuous assessment and a specific core (TOK, EE, CAS).
The Leaving Certificate is on a similar academic level, providing direct access to higher education through a national points system (CAO) in Ireland and recognised equivalency abroad.
Overall, the Irish Leaving Certificate is a well-respected, university-entrance qualification, valued internationally for its academic depth, breadth of study, and strong preparation for higher education.

We try to provide our students with a wide variety of subject choice to best prepare them for the leaving certificate and life at University or beyond. Students have the flexibility, subject to availability to choose a combination of subjects that best meet their needs and suit their learning capabilities for the Leaving Certificate.
Our subjects are delivered by experts who have a demonstrated track record in their field and provide a focused student textbook, developed by then in Ashfield, to concentrate on the upcoming examination and assessment.
Before You Arrive
Once you have accepted your place a dedicated member of the team will work closely with you to ensure that your child is ready to travel to Ireland and start their programme of study. We will provide information and support on healthcare, medical insurance, timetabling, subject choice, host family accommodation with trusted providers, and if required information on immigration and visa support.

While You’re A Student With Us
At the beginning of each term we will host an induction to welcome all new students and help them adjust to life at Ashfield. This will provide information on our location, nearby amenities, provide an opportunity to meet classmates and develop friendships.
Academic Support
At Ashfield College, we understand that studying abroad and completing the Irish Leaving Certificate can be both exciting and challenging. To support our international students, we provide access to experienced academic mentors and study skills experts throughout the year.
Our mentors meet regularly with students on a one-to-one basis, offering personalised guidance on subject choices, class timetables, and course content, as well as practical advice for adapting to student life in Ireland. Regular study skills seminars help each student build effective study habits tailored to their individual learning style.
The Ashfield College International Office closely monitors every student’s academic progress, well-being, and overall experience, maintaining open communication with parents and guardians. Parents can access real-time updates on grades and attendance and are always welcome to contact their dedicated international student support officer for updates or assistance at any time.
Application Process
Applying for a place at Ashfield College is simple. We ask that you complete the online application form. A member of the Admissions Team will reach out within one working day to advise on the documents required to proceed to next steps in the application process. Once received the team will reach out to arrange a remote Admissions meeting to discuss your goals and see how Ashfield can be of benefit to your child.
Once concluded we will confirm our admissions decision to you.
The fees for Non-EU international students are €12,500. This fee covers tuition, registration and medical insurance. Fees for Non-EU, who require a visa in advance of
joining the School, should submit their fees via Flywire. These fees are held in escrow until such time as the visa decision has been made. More details on fees are available here.
